“Working” Aspect of the Sheepfold

The Sheepfold is a faith based, working, transitional domestic violence program for women with children in their custody. One of the goals of our program is to have our families transition from the program into independent living.

This is where the “working” aspect of our program comes into play. During their time with us, our mothers are given the time and space to look for full time work so that they can support their families in the future. However, for some there are more foundational steps that need to be taken, like getting their GED, completing an associate's degree, or under graduate degree becomes a key part of their program steps.

It is a blessing for us to give our residents the opportunity and encouragement to complete those GED or college requirements. Self-improvement and accomplishment play vital roles in our mother's transformation journey.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
- Jeremiah 29:11

Birthday Parties

One of my favorite opportunities as a house manager is getting to throw a Birthday party for a mom or child in the home. Each resident and child is special, so their day of birth is something to celebrate! I'm no decorator, but making the dining room festive and celebratory is a fun challenge.

Whoever's birthday it is gets to pick a special birthday meal and dessert for that night's dinner. Every time, I am reminded of God's goodness and the generosity of our donors—it is only because of them that we are able to do this. For many of our moms and children, this is the only real party they've had. Often, birthdays for our moms can be a reminder of our earthly failings as humans. Their past birthdays may have gone unacknowledged by loved ones or they are missing those loved ones.

In our homes, no birthday is forgotten and I am reminded of the blessing it is to be able to bless others. Recently, I had a mom come home and mention her disappointment that her family never contacted her to wish her a happy birthday. She was clearly dejected and let down. That night, after all of the residents had pitched in to decorate for her, going beautifully over the top with streamers, confetti and birthday banners. Seeing this mom's face light up as she came into the room and saw everything, including requested, heartwarming experience. Each birthday is a chance to shower a resident with love and a bonding experience for the house and I am so lucky to be a part of it!

Life the Sheepfold Way...

I had the privilege of working as a house manager for 6 years before taking a new position in our corporate office. I always knew in my head that our program, schedule and parenting techniques were helpful, but it all turned into heart knowledge when I became a mother.

A fascinating thing happened when my son was born and again when my daughter joined our family through foster care. I set up the Sheepfold shelter schedule and expectation in my own home, and watched us thrive. There is so much practical and spiritual wisdom originating from our founder, Fran, and built on by Godly women in this organization over the span of 40 years. I have personally seen the blessing that comes by doing family life the Sheepfold way.
